Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “Fifth of May”) commemorates Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire when French troops stormed the city of Puebla in 1862.
People in Puebla, Mexico now celebrate Cinco de Mayo to honor the Battle of Puebla and the historic victory. The holiday is also widely celebrated in the United States, with Americans using the day to honor Mexican culture.
