4 Pride-Inspired DIY Fashion Accessories for Kids & Teens

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈 This is the perfect time to show your support to the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) community! We celebrate Pride Month to honor the identity, rights, and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people as we work toward a more equitable future. As adults, publicly celebrating Pride Month also helps foster a greater sense of belonging for everyone in our communities, helping LGBTQ+ youth and other adults feel safe, affirmed, and welcome.

Did You Know? Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising. In June 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, with the intent to arrest patrons just for living as themselves. When patrons, including trans activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, stood up to the police, the uprising began.

Since 1969, the United States has made great strides toward LGBTQ+ acceptance, but there’s still more we can do to create inclusivity and a stronger sense of belonging for all people.

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate Pride Month and show your commitment to the cause, check out these 4 Pride-Inspired DIY Fashion Accessories! Not only are these accessories fun and fashionable, but they also allow you to show your pride and/or let the LGBTQ+ people in your life know you’re someone they can be themselves around.

Pride Bracelets

These beaded bracelets are popular fashion accessories that are stylish and easy to make! Mix and match pony beads to make different patterns and color combinations for your bracelets.

In this tutorial, we use colors from the rainbow flag. The rainbow flag was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, an activist, artist, designer, and drag performer. The different colors of the flag represent togetherness and reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.

This perler bead project is a great way to let your creativity and pride shine! Perler beads allow you to make any shape or design, so you can create pride flags, hearts, or anything else.

In this tutorial, we make an asexual flag keychain. Asexuality refers to a lack of sexual attraction. It’s often confused with abstinence or celibacy, but those concepts describe people’s behavior, whereas asexuality is about how people feel.

Lanyard Pride Keychain

Create a colorful lanyard keychain to put on your backpack, purse, or anywhere else! Once you make a keychain, you can show off your pride everywhere you go.

In this video, we create a lanyard keychain using the pansexual flag colors. Pansexual people are those who are attracted to others regardless of gender. Pansexuality is similar to bisexuality, which is attraction both to one’s own gender and to all other genders. While there’s a lot of overlap between these identities, their different definitions resonate with different people.

Materials needed:

  • Plastic lacing
  • Lanyard hook
  • Key ring
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Tape
