4 Pride-Inspired DIY Fashion Accessories for Kids & Teens

Happy Pride Month! This is a great time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community! LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, but the community includes anyone whose gender or sexuality falls outside the mainstream. We celebrate Pride Month to support the diversity of gender identities and sexual orientations as we work toward a more inclusive future.

Did You Know? Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the events of Stonewall. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, with the intent to arrest patrons for living as themselves. Patrons, including trans activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, stood up to the police, and the Stonewall uprising began.

The U.S. has made great strides for LGBTQ+ acceptance since then, but there’s still more we can do to ensure true equality for all.

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate Pride Month and show your commitment to the cause, check out these 4 Pride-Inspired DIY Fashion Accessories! Not only are they fun and fashionable, but they also let the LGBTQ+ people in your life know you’re someone they can be themselves around.

Perler Bead Pride Keychains 💜

This perler bead project is a great way to let your creativity and pride shine! Perler beads allow you to make any shape or design, so you can create pride flags, hearts, or anything else.

In this tutorial, we make an asexual flag keychain. Asexuality refers to a lack of sexual attraction. It’s often confused with abstinence or celibacy, but those concepts describe people’s behavior, whereas asexuality is about how people feel.

The asexual flag is black, grey, white, and purple to symbolize asexuality, grey-asexuality, non-asexual partners and allies, and community.

Materials needed:

  • Perler beads & board
  • Split ring / key ring
  • Iron
  • Parchment paper

Paracord Pride Bracelet

Braid different colors of paracord together to create a unique bracelet! You can use any colors you like to show off and share your pride and make your bracelet personal to you.

Our paracord bracelet uses the colors of the trigender flag. Trigender refers both to people who experience 3 different genders and to people whose gender is in a 3rd category, completely distinct from male or female.

The trigender flag is pink, purple, and green, which symbolizes feminine genders, masculine genders, and neutral or nonbinary genders.

Lanyard Pride Keychain 🎒

Create a colorful lanyard keychain to put on your backpack, purse, or anywhere else! Once you make a keychain, you can show off your pride everywhere you go.

In this video, we create a lanyard keychain using the pansexual flag colors. Pansexual people are individuals who are attracted to others regardless of gender. Pansexuality is similar to bisexuality, which is attraction both to one’s own gender and to all other genders. While there’s a lot of overlap between these identities, their different definitions resonate with different people.

The pansexual flag is cyan, magenta, and yellow to represent attraction to men, attraction to women, and attraction to nonbinary people.

Materials needed:

  • Plastic lacing
  • Lanyard hook
  • Key ring
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Tape
